Medog Nature Reserve

Remote subtropical reserve in southeastern Tibet, where Himalayan forest drops toward the Yarlung Tsangpo.

Medog Nature Reserve lies in the warm, wet southeastern corner of Tibet, where the plateau breaks down toward deep Himalayan valleys. The landscape is a sharp contrast to the dry, high-altitude image many travellers have of Tibet: forest, rain, landslides, orchids, and steep green slopes.

This is not an easy sightseeing stop from Nyingchi. Roads, permits, weather, and local conditions all matter, and the area rewards travellers with time rather than those chasing a quick photo. Its value is as a glimpse of Tibet's biological diversity, especially when combined with the Yarlung Tsangpo canyon country.
