Nyingchi rewards visitors who come prepared for both the altitude and the remoteness. The main draws are the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, the lush Lulang valley, and the ancient cypress groves — none of which resemble the barren Tibet of most people's imagination. Roads have improved dramatically since the Sichuan-Tibet Highway was upgraded, but distances are still large and timings should be generous.
