Things to Do

Kashgar's sights are concentrated around the old town and the Sunday market. Beyond that, the oasis itself is the attraction.

Id Kah Mosque — The onion-domed Aidkah Mosque is more than 400 years old, the largest mosque in China and the heart of the old town. The big square in front is where people gather, and the surrounding streets are good for souvenir shopping.

Abakh Khoja Mausoleum — The tomb of the 17th-century ruler Abakh Khoja, containing the remains of some 70 of his descendants. A beautiful tiled building on the outskirts of town.

Sunday Market — The legendary livestock and goods market, held on the river east of town. Vendors sell everything from exotic knives to camels, and the atmosphere is so colourful and chaotic you will struggle to take it all in.

Oasis Cycling — One of the best things to do is rent a bike and ride out into the oasis. There are a few saints' tombs along the way, but the real pleasure is the landscape and the friendly people.
