Grape Valley

8 km Uyghur farming valley famous for its raisins

A narrow, irrigated valley running through the Flaming Mountains 15 km northeast of Turpan, given over almost entirely to grape and raisin production. The traditional Uyghur drying houses — square brick towers with diamond-patterned ventilation holes through every wall — cluster across the hillsides, and the vines themselves are trained over wooden frames above the lanes to create cool, dappled tunnels.

Touristy in places — costumed dance shows, packaged raisin stalls, donkey-cart rides — but the working orchards and the surviving traditional houses are genuine. Best in late August and September during the harvest. Combine with the Flaming Mountains for a half-day.
