The sights around Turpan are spread out across the desert basin. The Emin Minaret sits on the eastern edge of town, but the ruined cities of Gaochang and Jiaohe, the Astana Tombs, the Bezeklik Caves and the Flaming Mountains all require a half-day or full-day trip. A typical visit hires a driver for one or two days to combine several sites; mid-morning until early afternoon involves serious heat in summer.
