Wenhua Road Night Market

Uyghur street-food market, busy from dusk to midnight

A two-block stretch of Wenhua Lu in central Turpan turns into a covered food and goods market every evening from late afternoon onwards. Lamb kebabs grilled on long open coals dominate, but you can also find lagman, polo, dapanji (the big-plate chicken), naan baked in tandoor ovens, and pile after pile of mountain fruit.

The crowd is largely local Uyghur families, with a handful of Han Chinese tourists and the rare foreigner. Prices are very low; English menus essentially don't exist; pointing works. Don't miss the iced yoghurt and watermelon stands at the eastern end.
