The Jiele Golden Pagoda sits in Jiele Village, seven kilometres from Ruili city centre along National Highway 320, and is the most significant Buddhist monument in the Dehong region. The main pagoda's gilded spire is visible across the surrounding fields from a considerable distance, and the complex includes prayer halls, a large reclining Buddha, and a series of smaller stupas arranged in the characteristic Dai Buddhist style — lower and more ornate than the Tibetan versions found further north in Yunnan.
The setting is the most photogenic aspect: the golden spire against the deep green of the surrounding banana and rubber plantations, with the low hills of Myanmar visible to the west. This is Theravada Buddhist territory, and the art and architecture here belong unmistakably to the Southeast Asian tradition rather than the Chinese Buddhist mainstream. Morning visits, when monks are present and devotional activity is going on, are far more rewarding than midday arrivals with tour groups.
