Mange Temple

A working village temple in the northern outskirts of Jinghong, Mange Temple (Mànggé Fósì) is much older and quieter than the showpiece monasteries in the centre. The compound dates in part to the eighteenth century, with the more recent buildings carefully rebuilt in traditional Dai style after damage in the twentieth century. The stupa in the courtyard, gilt and tiered, is the most photogenic small stupa in the city.

The neighbourhood around the temple is a Dai village absorbed into Jinghong's expansion — wooden stilt houses, banana trees in the yards, motorbikes in the lanes. Worth twenty minutes' walking around if you have the time.
