In the far southeast of the prefecture, towards the Laotian border, Wangtianshu Rainforest Park preserves the densest surviving tropical rainforest in China. The park's signature attraction is a 500-metre canopy walkway suspended 36 metres above the forest floor — a slightly nerve-wracking but unforgettable way to see the rainforest at the level of the upper canopy.
The site is far enough from Jinghong (around four hours by bus) that it is best treated as an overnight from Mengla town. Wildlife is shy but the trees themselves — buttressed dipterocarps, strangler figs, the eponymous "sky-reaching" wangtian-shu — are the real reason to come.
