General Buddhist Temple (Wat Pajay)

Inside Manting Park, perched at the top of the hill, the General Buddhist Temple is the most important Theravada Buddhist temple in southwest China. The compound is recent — most of the original buildings were destroyed in the 1960s — but the architecture is faithfully Tai, with deeply layered tiled roofs, gilt eaves, and serpent (naga) banisters. Inside, the central seated Buddha is the work of monks from Thailand.

Visit at dawn if you can — the monks chant morning prayers around 5:30 a.m. and the temple has the place to itself before the park opens for the day. Modest dress required.

A story
Wat Pajay was the head temple of the entire Sipsongpanna Tai kingdom — the equivalent of a Theravada cathedral, supervising all the village monasteries across the region. It was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and rebuilt only in the 1990s; today it is once again the seat of the senior Theravada monk in southwest China, and Dai novices from across the prefecture come here for their formal education.
