Dongtou District comprises an archipelago of over 300 islands southeast of Wenzhou, connected to the mainland by a series of bridges and causeways. The scenery is classic Zhejiang coastal — rugged rocky headlands, fishing villages, and clear water — and the area is a popular escape from the city heat in summer.
Dongtou town itself is a working fishing port worth visiting for the morning fish market and the seafood restaurants along the harbour front. Several of the smaller islands have beaches, though these are modestly scaled compared to Hainan or Fujian. The drive across the cross-sea bridges, strung across open water between the islands, is itself an experience — the Lingkun Bridge system is several kilometres long and the views of the archipelago from the roadway are striking.
