Yandang Mountains

One of the most dramatic geological landscapes in eastern China — volcanic peaks, gorges, and waterfalls about 90km north of Wenzhou

The Yandang Mountains (雁荡山) are a protected scenic area about 90 kilometres north of Wenzhou, and the main reason many travellers choose to spend more than a night in the region. The volcanic landscape has been eroded into extraordinary formations: needle-like spires, deep gorges, natural arches, and waterfalls that drop hundreds of metres through narrow clefts. The area is a UNESCO Geopark and has been celebrated in Chinese poetry and painting since the Tang Dynasty.

The scenic area is large and divided into several sub-sections; Lingfeng and Lingyun are the most visited, each with a cluster of named formations and well-marked walking trails. Ling Yan — a sheer cliff face rising about 300 metres — is perhaps the single most impressive sight. Day trips from Wenzhou are possible but a stay of one or two nights at a local inn gives more time for the longer walks. Spring and autumn avoid the summer heat and winter fog.

A story
The Yandang Mountains are sometimes called the 'geological museum' of Zhejiang because they preserve a nearly complete record of the volcanic eruptions that shaped this part of coastal China over 120 million years ago. The distinctive landforms — spires, arches, and sheer cliffs — result from differential erosion of ancient volcanic rocks. The site was first praised by Tang Dynasty poets and has been on itineraries of Chinese travellers for over 1,200 years.
