Paphos Archaeological Park

UNESCO-listed open-air park of Greco-Roman ruins along the seafront

The Kato Paphos Archaeological Park covers the seafront ruins of Nea Paphos, the city's ancient Hellenistic and Roman heart. Spread across a flat coastal plateau next to the harbour, it bundles together the great Roman villas (Dionysus, Theseus, Aion, Orpheus), an odeon, the agora, the Saranta Kolones castle and the lighthouse — most reachable along signposted gravel paths.

Allow at least half a day. There is little shade and even less drinking water on site, so come early and bring a hat. The combined ticket also covers the Tombs of the Kings up the coast.

A story
When a farmer ploughed a field here in 1962, his blade caught on a stone that turned out to be the corner of the Villa of Dionysus — and unearthed one of the largest collections of Roman mosaics anywhere in the Mediterranean.
