Kakatiya Kala Thoranam

The Kakatiya Kala Thoranam — the ornamental arched gateways of Warangal Fort — are the most photographed monuments in Warangal and the symbol of Telangana state. These four massive stone arches, built in the 13th century and oriented to the four cardinal directions, originally marked the entrances to the inner court of the Kakatiya palace complex.

Each gateway consists of two vertical granite columns supporting a horizontal arch beam, all carved with narrative friezes, scrollwork, and devotional motifs. The scale is imposing: the arches stand several metres high, and each stone block weighs tonnes. Despite the deliberate destruction of the fort by the Delhi Sultanate in 1323, the gateways survived — partly because of their sheer mass, partly because they may have been seen as architectural curiosities rather than military infrastructure. Today they stand in an open archaeological park within the fort complex and can be visited freely during daylight hours.

A story
One of these four ceremonial arches was adopted as the emblem of the state of Telangana when the state was created in 2014 — a choice that underscored how deeply the Kakatiya legacy is embedded in Telangana's regional identity. You'll see the arch reproduced on government buildings, official seals, and roadside signage across the state.
