Dighalipukhuri

A medieval man-made tank in the heart of Guwahati, half a kilometre long and a few hundred metres wide. Tradition attributes it to the wedding gift of king Bhagadatta to his daughter Bhanumati; archaeology dates it to at least the 9th century. Today it is essentially the city's central park — joggers in the morning, families in the evening, boatsmen renting out paddle boats for ₹100 a head.

The east bank holds the high court and the Assam State Museum, the west has Cotton College and a few cafes. Walk the perimeter at sunset for a sense of the city's older bones, which the surrounding traffic-choked streets disguise.
