The best day trips out of Guwahati combine quickly. Hajo, 30 km northwest, is a small town where Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim shrines share the same hilltop — Hayagriva Madhava Temple, Poa Mecca and a small Buddhist chaitya. Sualkuchi, the silk-weaving town on the north bank, is half an hour further; you can visit weaving families and watch muga and eri silk being made. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, 50 km east, has the highest density of one-horned rhinos in the world — a morning jeep safari is more or less guaranteed sightings.
For a longer day, Shillong in Meghalaya is three hours away through the hills. Kaziranga National Park is reachable as an overnight rather than a day trip — five hours each way.
