The Sukreswar Temple sits on a small hill — Sukreswar Hill — directly above the Brahmaputra in the old centre, and is home to one of the largest Shiva lingams in India. The current structure was rebuilt in 1744 by the Ahom king Pramatta Singha, but a shrine has been on the site for far longer; the name comes from the sage Sukra, who legend says installed the original lingam.
The interest is partly the lingam, partly the spectacular view of the river from the temple precinct. A long flight of stone steps climbs the south side of the hill; the descent on the north drops directly to the river ghat, where you can watch sadhus and pilgrims bathing. Most rewarding at dawn or sunset.
