Church of Our Lady of Mercy

The Church of Our Lady of Mercy stands at the centre of Colva village, a few minutes' walk from the beach. Built in the 17th century in the Baroque style typical of Portuguese Goa, it is one of South Goa's older churches and considerably more modest than the grand basilicas of Old Goa — but all the more atmospheric for it. The whitewashed facade faces a shaded square where village life quietly unfolds around it.

The church is open to visitors outside of service times. The interior is simple and cool, with painted wooden altarpieces and the usual Baroque flourishes scaled for a parish rather than an empire.

A story
Each October the church hosts the Fama of Colva, one of South Goa's largest festivals, when the figure of the Menino Jesus — reputedly brought from Mozambique in 1648 — is carried in procession through the village, drawing pilgrims from across the region.
