Maruti Temple

Hindu temple on the Altinho hill above Fontainhas

The Maruti Temple sits high on the Altinho hill above Fontainhas — a small saffron-coloured shrine to the monkey god Hanuman, lit at night against the dark slope so that it is visible from much of the lower town. The current building is mostly 19th-century, raised after the relaxation of the Portuguese Inquisition's restrictions on Hindu worship, but the cult has been continuous on this site since the 17th century.

The temple is most spectacular during the annual Hanuman Jayanti festival in April, when it is lit with thousands of oil lamps and pilgrims climb the steps in a continuous procession. At any other time the climb up — by road or by the steep flights of steps from Rua 31 de Janeiro — is rewarded with the best panorama of central Panaji and the Mandovi estuary.

A story
The temple was founded under the most discreet circumstances possible. The Portuguese colonial authorities had outlawed Hindu temples in their Old Conquests territory, so for nearly a century devotees worshipped a hidden idol of Hanuman in a small shop in Fontainhas. Only after the end of the Inquisition in 1812 did they openly build a temple, on the hill directly above the city.
