Ellisbridge

Western bank around the old bridge, museum row

Ellisbridge is named after the 1892 iron-truss bridge over the Sabarmati that first joined the walled city with its expanding western suburbs. The bridge is now too narrow for buses and is closed to motor traffic, but pedestrians and cyclists still use it. The neighbourhood on the western bank contains some of the most agreeable parts of Ahmedabad: the L.D. Museum, the Tagore Memorial Hall, the M.J. Library, Law Garden, and Mahalaxmi Cinema.

The streets are wider, the trees taller, and the pace slower than the old city across the river. The Ahmedabad Riverfront runs through Ellisbridge with the most spectacular views back to the walled city.
