The Sabarmati Riverfront, completed in stages between 2012 and 2024, transformed both banks of the city's river into a continuous park-and-promenade for 11 kilometres. Where there used to be slums, garbage, and a thin trickle of water, there are now wide brick walkways, boating jetties, public gardens, an open-air amphitheatre, and a permanent floating restaurant.
The newer Atal Bridge — a pedestrian-only suspension bridge of curving pink and yellow steel — links the eastern and western promenades near the Old City. Sunset is the popular time; the river fills with paddle boats, and the Sabarmati Aarti ceremony with floating lamps takes place at Vasna Barrage on certain evenings.
