Villa Sarabhai

Le Corbusier private villa, Shahibaug

Le Corbusier designed the Villa Sarabhai in 1951 for Manorama Sarabhai, widowed sister-in-law of the founder of the Calico Mills. It is one of his three Ahmedabad commissions, the others being the Sanskar Kendra and the Mill Owners' Association building on the river. The villa is a long, low, vault-roofed house of brick and concrete, with cool dim interiors and an enormous indoor-outdoor garden — exactly suited to the climate.

The house is still a private residence and is not open to walk-in visitors. Architectural scholars can write to the Sarabhai Foundation for special permission; otherwise the building is best viewed in books. The next-door Mill Owners' Association building can be visited on request through the textile manufacturers' organisation.
