The road north of Bhuj towards the White Rann passes through a string of small villages each producing a different traditional craft. Bhirandiyara is famous for the mawa sweets cooked in clay ovens and sold at every roadside stall. Nirona produces lacquer-turned woodwork and the last surviving Rogan painters in India — a painstaking craft of trailing molten castor-oil pigment from a stylus onto cotton. Ajrakhpur is the centre of Ajrakh block-printing, and Hodka is known for its mirror-and-leather goods.
The villages are best visited as a loop by hired car or motorbike. Most artisans welcome visitors and will demonstrate their work; prices are direct from the maker. Combine with a sunset visit to the White Rann at Dhordo in winter.
