Kaba Gandhi No Delo

The house where Mohandas Gandhi spent part of his childhood, now a small museum

The two-storey haveli where Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi lived from the age of seven, after his father moved the family from Porbandar to take up the post of Diwan of Rajkot State. Gandhi attended the Alfred High School a short walk away and was married in this house, at the age of thirteen, to Kasturba. The building is plain rather than grand: a small interior courtyard ringed by simple rooms, with carved wooden balconies overhead.

The museum's exhibits are unfussy — photographs, a few personal items, panels of explanatory text in Gujarati and English. Sewing classes for local women are still held in one of the rooms in keeping with Gandhi's commitment to self-reliance, and you may hear charkha spinning wheels in use. The building also operates a small primary school. Entry is free; allow about half an hour.
