Mahatma Gandhi Museum

Modern museum in the restored Alfred High School where Gandhi was a student

A larger and more recent museum than the Kaba Gandhi No Delo, housed in the beautifully restored Alfred High School where Gandhi was a student from 1880 to 1887. The Indo-Saracenic stone building dates from 1875 and had fallen into disrepair before being reopened as a museum in 2017. The exhibits are professionally designed and cover Gandhi's life and the wider Indian independence movement in detail, with interactive displays, original photographs and documents, and a quiet meditation hall.

A small bookshop sells inexpensive editions of Gandhi's writings, including the Autobiography whose early chapters are set in this very city. The school's original classroom, including the bench Gandhi is said to have sat on, is preserved on the upper floor. Closed Mondays.
