Baba Reshi Shrine

The Baba Reshi dargah sits at the foot of the Gulmarg slope, about 5 km below the main meadow on the road toward Tangmarg. It is the tomb of Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom's disciple Baba Reshi, a fifteenth-century Sufi saint revered across Kashmir, and one of the most peaceful spots in the region.

The shrine is built in the traditional Kashmiri style, with carved wooden screens and a tiered roof of layered timber and slate. Tall chinar trees shade the courtyard, and a stream runs nearby. Pilgrims visit year-round; the atmosphere on a quiet weekday morning is contemplative and unhurried.

Stop here on your way down from Gulmarg rather than as a separate excursion — it adds very little distance to the journey and makes a good counterpoint to the alpine spectacle above. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome; dress modestly and remove shoes before entering the shrine building.
