Getting There

Gulmarg has no airport and no railway station. All visitors arrive by road.

From Srinagar the distance is about 55 km via Tangmarg, taking one and a half to two hours depending on traffic. Taxis from Srinagar are the standard option; shared sumos (large jeeps) also run the route and are considerably cheaper. The road is well maintained as far as Tangmarg; the final stretch up to the meadow is steeper and narrower, but paved.

Most visitors come as a day trip from Srinagar. The taxi fare for a return day trip is fixed by the local union and should be confirmed before departure. Staying overnight is worthwhile if you want early morning light or more than one day on the slopes.

From Jammu involves either a flight to Srinagar (40 minutes) or the long road through the mountains (about 300 km, nine or more hours depending on conditions). Flying is strongly recommended; the road is spectacular but exhausting and subject to closures in winter.

In winter, road conditions between Tangmarg and Gulmarg can deteriorate quickly after snowfall. Check locally before setting out and allow extra time.
