Gulmarg Golf Club

The Gulmarg Golf Club occupies a wide, undulating meadow at around 2,650 m, spread across the gentler slopes below the main village. It is, by most measures, the highest golf course in the world, and the setting is genuinely spectacular: fairways of alpine grass flanked by fir forests, with snow-capped peaks on three sides.

The 18-hole course is open from May to October, when the meadow is clear of snow. Green fees are reasonable by international standards and equipment hire is available. The course is public and open to visiting golfers without a club membership.

Even if you don't play, the meadow is a fine place to walk in summer. The flat ground makes it one of the easiest parts of Gulmarg to explore on foot, and the wildflowers between the fairways in June and July are exceptional.

A story
The golf course was laid out by British officers in 1911, making it one of the oldest in the subcontinent. They played here throughout the summer season of the Raj, with the Kashmir peaks as a backdrop, and the tradition of summer golf at altitude has continued without interruption for over a century.
