Bahu Fort

Bahu Fort commands a strong position above the south bank of the Tawi River, about 5 km from the city centre. The approach through the Bagh-e-Bahu gardens below the fort makes for a pleasant walk. The fort walls enclose a courtyard and the Bave Wali Mata Temple, which is the main reason most locals come.

The views over the Tawi and back toward the Shivalik Hills are good, particularly at dusk. The Bagh-e-Bahu gardens at the foot of the fort have walking paths, a small zoo, and an aquarium — more popular with local families than with most tourists, but a good place to sit and watch Jammu life.

A story
Bahu Fort sits on a rocky outcrop above the Tawi River and is claimed to be the oldest surviving fort in the Jammu region — some accounts date its original construction over 3,000 years ago, though the current structure is mostly Dogra-era. The temple inside the fort, dedicated to the goddess Bave Wali Mata (a form of Kali), is considered more sacred than the fort itself and draws a steady stream of pilgrims on Sundays and Tuesdays when it is especially busy.
