A natural lake about 60 km east of Jammu, Mansar is sacred to Hindus and draws a mix of pilgrims and day-trippers. The Sheshnag Temple on the lake shore — dedicated to the serpent deity — is the main religious site, and the water itself is considered holy. Boating on the lake is permitted and popular with local families.
The drive from Jammu through the Shivalik foothills is attractive, and the lake is small enough to circumnavigate on foot in under an hour. Combined with a stop at the nearby Surinsar Lake a few kilometres away, it makes a comfortable half-day excursion. Buses run from Jammu's main bus stand.
