Thiksey Monastery, 19 km from Leh, is one of the most visually striking gompas in Ladakh — a white-and-ochre complex climbing a steep hill above the Indus, often compared to the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The gompa belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Inside are a series of temples, a large statue of Maitreya (the future Buddha), ancient frescoes, and a collection of thangka paintings. The morning puja attended by resident monks is worth timing a visit around.
