The Bund

The Bund is Srinagar's oldest formal promenade, a tree-lined embankment along the Jhelum River near the main business district. Built during the British period when Residency Road was the colonial administrative centre, it has the slightly faded grandeur of a promenade that was once more important than it is now. Old plane trees shade the path; a few colonial-era buildings face the river from the opposite bank.

The Bund is where Suffering Moses, one of the city's most famous handicraft shops, is located, and several other older commercial establishments. It is also the address of a few good independent cafés and the departure point for some of the boat tours of the Jhelum. In the evenings it becomes a walking circuit for older residents and office workers. The Jhelum here is visibly different from the city waterway further north — wider, moving more slowly, with the old Amira Kadal bridge adding some architectural interest. Not the most dramatic sight in Srinagar, but a pleasant place to walk without being followed by touts.
