Bahmani Tombs

Open-field necropolis of Bahmani rulers, with domed tombs standing east of Bidar.

The Bahmani Tombs lie east of Bidar, away from the bustle of the town. The domed mausoleums are weathered but powerful, set in open ground where the Deccan sky does half the work. Several tombs preserve painted or calligraphic decoration inside, though conditions vary and some chambers may be locked.

This is one of Bidar's most atmospheric stops, especially late in the afternoon. Take an auto-rickshaw rather than trying to walk from the centre. The site rewards visitors who already have some context from Gulbarga and Bijapur, because it shows the dynasty's later, more provincial grandeur.

A story
The tomb of Ahmad Shah Wali is still treated with unusual reverence because the sultan was remembered locally as both ruler and saint. During the annual urs, the lonely royal necropolis briefly becomes a living pilgrimage ground.
