Mangaladevi Temple is one of Mangalore's defining religious sites, not least because the city is traditionally said to take its name from the goddess worshipped here. The temple stands south of the centre and remains an active place of devotion, so the interest is both historical and living.
Visit with the usual temple etiquette: dress modestly, move quietly, and expect rituals to matter more than sightseeing. The Navaratri period is especially important, but even on an ordinary day the temple gives a clearer sense of Mangalore's older identity than the busy commercial streets alone.
