The Church of Our Lady of Miracles (Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres) is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Mangalore, with roots going back to the Portuguese missionary presence in the 16th century. The current church building is largely 19th century, with a tall whitewashed facade that has become one of Mangalore's most recognizable landmarks. The interior is cool and well-kept, with good light through the tall windows.
The area around the church — Hampankatta — is the commercial heart of Mangalore, busy with shops and traffic. Coming in the early morning or evening avoids the worst of the congestion and gives the church surroundings a more manageable atmosphere. The feast of Our Lady of Milagres in September draws large crowds from the Catholic community across coastal Karnataka.
