Pathiramanal — "Midnight Sands" in Malayalam — is a small uninhabited island in Vembanad Lake, accessible only by boat from the Kumarakom shore, about 25 km west of Kottayam town. The island is a protected bird sanctuary and one of the best birdwatching spots in Kerala, hosting large populations of migratory waterbirds from November through February: open-billed storks, painted storks, herons, egrets, darters, and occasional rarer species make the island their temporary home.
Getting there requires hiring a boat from Kumarakom or from one of the houseboat operators on the lake. The journey takes about 20 minutes each way and the boat trips are themselves enjoyable — Vembanad Lake is wide and peaceful, with herons standing in the shallows and fishing boats moving slowly in the distance. The island has no facilities and no permanent inhabitants; it is simply a low wooded island rising from the lake. The best time to visit is early morning during the November–February migration season, when the birds are most active.
