Punnathur Kotta Elephant Sanctuary

The Guruvayur Temple's elephant sanctuary, set on the grounds of a former palace about 3 km from the famous Guruvayur Krishna Temple (27 km from Thrissur city centre). The sanctuary houses around 60 elephants — the largest captive elephant population at any temple in India — in a wooded compound of 11.5 acres. The elephants are used in the elaborate processions at the Guruvayur Temple and other major temples across Kerala.

Visiting Punnathur Kotta gives a close encounter with elephants in a setting that balances working tradition with genuine care for the animals. The best time to visit is early morning when the elephants are bathed and fed, and when the mahouts (elephant handlers) are most active. Entry fees are modest. The nearby Guruvayur town is a major pilgrimage centre for Hindus, and the temple, though closed to non-Hindus, creates an energetic atmosphere in the streets around it.

A story
The Guruvayur Temple, which owns and manages Punnathur Kotta, is one of the wealthiest temples in India — it receives elephants as gifts from devotees who can afford to donate one of the most auspicious offerings in Kerala Hindu tradition. Some of the elephants at the sanctuary are worth crores of rupees based on their size, tusk quality, and ceremonial record. The most celebrated resident in recent decades was Guruvayur Kesavan, who died in 1976 and is commemorated by a life-size bronze statue at the sanctuary entrance.
