Vadakkunnathan Temple

The ancient Shiva temple that crowns the Thekkinkadu Maidan hillock is one of the oldest in Kerala, dating in its current form to at least the early medieval period. The temple's architecture is classic Kerala style — steeply pitched tiled roofs, carved wooden screens, concentric enclosures — and its traditions are among the most conservative in the state. The temple complex covers a significant area of the hillock and the outer walls are accessible for circumambulation.

Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the temple precincts, but the exterior is impressive and the surrounding Thekkinkadu Maidan — a huge grassy oval shaded by old trees — is open to everyone. This is where the Thrissur Pooram assembles, and even outside festival season the scale of the ground, and the quiet dignity of the temple above it, communicate why this spot became the centre of Kerala's most celebrated gathering.

A story
Non-Hindu visitors cannot enter the inner sanctum of the Vadakkunnathan Temple, but the outer walls are covered in murals illustrating episodes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, painted in the traditional Kerala style using natural pigments. The oldest sections of these murals may date to the 9th century CE, though most visible panels are from the 14th to 17th centuries. The combination of age, colour, and scriptural narrative is extraordinary, visible to visitors who circumnambulate the outer precinct without entering.
