Chappan Dukan — literally "56 shops" — is a row of food stalls and small restaurants in the New Palasia neighbourhood of Indore that has been operating since the 1970s, when the city authorities allocated 56 food vendor licences to a single street. The number has since grown, but the name stuck. It is to Sarafa Bazaar what a daytime café is to a restaurant: lighter, more casual, and accessible at all hours.
The food here leans toward snacks and sweets: the poha (a pressed-rice breakfast dish that is Indore's signature morning food), jalebis fresh from the fryer, various types of namkeen (savoury fried snacks for which the city is also famous), and a strong selection of Maharashtrian-influenced chaat. Go in the morning for poha and jalebi, or in the afternoon for a snack and chai. Chappan Dukan is in the newer part of the city, about 4 km north of the old city and the Rajwada.
