Getting There

Khajuraho is isolated by Indian standards — deliberately, it seems, as if the temples exist in their own world. The Khajuraho Airport (HJR) has direct connections to Delhi, Varanasi, and Agra on IndiGo and Air India; flight times are around an hour. Flying is the fastest option if you are combining Khajuraho with the Golden Triangle or a Varanasi visit.

There is no railway station in Khajuraho itself. The nearest railheads are Mahoba (63 km) and Satna (117 km), both served by trains from Delhi, Agra, Jhansi, and Varanasi. From either station, take a taxi or shared jeep to Khajuraho. The road is in good condition.

By road from Varanasi (395 km) or Agra (360 km), the drive takes around 7–8 hours. State buses run from Jhansi, Satna, and Bhopal. Private taxis are the most comfortable overland option. Some travellers combine Khajuraho with Orchha (175 km), which is worth the detour.
