The State Museum of Tribal and Folk Art (Rajya Tribal Sangrahalaya) offers a good counterpoint to a day spent among the medieval stone temples. The collection focuses on the living traditions of Madhya Pradesh's tribal communities — the Gondi, Bhil, Baiga, and others — with exhibits of painted scrolls, terracotta figures, metal castings, masks, and decorated everyday objects.
The museum is particularly strong on Gond art, the boldly patterned painting tradition from central India that has gained an international following in recent years. Original paintings by masters of the form are displayed alongside older pieces from village traditions. The building itself is pleasant, set among trees with decent natural light.
This is a short walk or a quick cycle from the main temple area and provides a useful perspective on the artistic traditions of the region that continued alongside and after the Chandela period. Entry fees are low and the museum is usually quiet.
