Getting There

Sanchi is 68 km north of Bhopal and easily reached by train: regular services on the Bhopal–Vidisha line stop at Sanchi station, about a kilometre from the site. The journey from Bhopal takes 45 minutes to an hour. From Vidisha (10 km away), auto-rickshaws and taxis make the short run regularly.

By road, Sanchi is a well-signed 68 km drive north of Bhopal on the NH 46. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are available from both Bhopal and Vidisha. Most visitors treat Sanchi as a half-day trip from Bhopal, returning for the night, but the Archaeological Survey of India rest house on the hill and a few basic guesthouses in the village make an overnight stay possible if you want more time with the site at dawn or dusk when the light on the carved gateways is at its best.
