Sanchi is essentially a single-destination visit: the hilltop complex of Buddhist monuments is the reason to come, and it is extraordinary. The site contains stupas, temples, monastic ruins, and the celebrated carved gateways (toranas) that are among the finest early Indian sculpture anywhere. Allow at least two to three hours on the hill. The site museum at the foot of the hill is a necessary companion, housing sculptures removed from the site for preservation. Sanchi is easily done as a day trip from Bhopal, or combined with a visit to Vidisha.
