Bhartrihari Caves

Cave shrine complex near the Shipra River, tied to poet-saint Bhartrihari

Bhartrihari Caves are a small cave-shrine complex north of Ujjain's main temple district, close to the Shipra River. Tradition links the caves with Bhartrihari, the poet and ascetic associated with renunciation, which gives the site its devotional pull.

The caves are low, atmospheric, and often busy with pilgrims rather than tourists. They work best as part of a wider Ujjain circuit including the ghats and Kal Bhairav Temple. Bring a little patience: the site is more about local religious life and legend than grand architecture.
