Ujjain is a city of temples, ghats, and pilgrims — one of Hinduism's seven sacred cities, and one of the few places on the subcontinent where ancient religious life continues largely undiluted by tourism. The great temple of Mahakaleshwar is the centre of everything, but the city rewards several days of exploration: the observatory, the river ghats at dawn, the smaller temples along the Kshipra.
