Amruteshwar Temple

The Amruteshwar Temple in Ratanwadi village, 10 kilometres from Bhandardhara, is a finely carved Shiva temple built in the Hemadpanthi style during the 12th century. The exterior is covered in intricate stone carvings of deities, celestial beings, and decorative motifs, remarkably well-preserved for its age and location.

The temple is active — priests conduct daily rituals and the courtyard fills with pilgrims on festival days — which gives it a living quality that many ancient temples in tourist corridors have lost. The setting, surrounded by rice fields at the base of a forested hill, is genuinely lovely. Combine with the Ratangad Fort trek above for a full day in the valley.

A story
The temple was built during the Shilahara dynasty in the 12th century, a period of intensive temple construction across the Western Ghats. It survived largely intact because of its remote location — unlike many temples in the plains, it was too inaccessible to attract the attention of the Mughal armies that destroyed so much of Maharashtra's medieval religious architecture.
