Arthur Lake and Wilson Dam

Arthur Lake is the reservoir created by the Wilson Dam on the Pravara River, and it is the defining feature of Bhandardhara. In the monsoon the water level rises dramatically and the lake fills to a vivid green against the surrounding mountains; in the dry season the water recedes to reveal more of the valley floor, which has its own melancholy beauty.

The dam itself, built in 1910, is open to visitors and offers good views both down the river gorge and back across the lake toward the mountains. Boating on the lake is available from the MTDC resort jetty — a quiet way to take in the landscape. At sunset the reflections of Ratangad Fort on the far shore are worth the timing.

A story
The Wilson Dam was built in 1910 during the British Raj to supply water to Bombay, making it one of the oldest gravity dams in Maharashtra. It was named after James Wilson, who later went on to found The Economist. During the monsoon, the overflow runs over the top of the dam in a wide curtain — a sight that draws visitors from across Maharashtra despite the difficult roads.
