Gandhi Research Foundation

The Gandhi Research Foundation in Jalgaon is an unusual institution — a privately funded centre dedicated to studying and promoting Gandhian thought, housed in a purpose-built campus on the edge of town. The foundation runs an academy, library, and museum, and organises programmes on non-violence, sustainability, and conflict resolution attended by scholars from across India and abroad.

The museum wing is open to visitors and traces Gandhi's life and philosophy through photographs, documents, and artefacts, including reconstructed interiors of the kinds of spaces Gandhi lived and worked in. The campus itself is well-designed and peaceful, with gardens and a strong sense of purpose that distinguishes it from the typical government-run museum. It offers a genuinely different perspective on Jalgaon as a place that has contributed to something beyond its agricultural wealth.

A story
Jalgaon was chosen for the institute largely because of its connection to the Jain industrialist families of Khandesh, whose traditions of non-violence aligned closely with Gandhi's philosophy. The foundation houses one of the most comprehensive Gandhian archives in India outside of the national institutions in Delhi and Ahmedabad.
