Muktainagar, about 45 km west of Jalgaon, takes its name from the 13th-century saint-poet Muktabai, a disciple of the Warkari tradition whose temple draws pilgrims from across Maharashtra year-round. The town sits on the Tapti River, and the temple complex is on the riverbank — a setting that makes it particularly atmospheric in the cool of the morning.
The annual Mukatabai fair, held in the Hindu month of Kartik, brings tens of thousands of pilgrims from the surrounding district and is one of the larger religious gatherings in northern Maharashtra. For travellers with a particular interest in the Varkari tradition and its saint-poets — Dnyaneshwar, Tukaram, Namdev, and their contemporaries — Muktainagar is worth the detour. The town is also the location of one of the largest earthen dams in Maharashtra.
