Gateway of India

Iconic waterfront arch marking Britain's arrival and departure

A 26-metre basalt arch built by the British to commemorate the 1911 visit of King George V and Queen Mary — and later the point through which the last British troops departed India in 1948. The gateway stands at the southern tip of the city on the waterfront, with the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel directly behind it. Boats to Elephanta Island depart from the jetty alongside.
